South America Travel Information
South America is the 4th largest continent with a land area of 17,800,00 square kilometres (687,260 square miles), covering almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. South America is the 5th largest in terms of population, with approximately 371 million people. South America is comprised of 15 countries, including two British dependent territories.
South America is a continent occupying the southern part of the supercontinent of the Americas. It sits entirely in the Western Hemisphere, and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the West by the Pacific Ocean and on the North and East by the Atlantic Ocean. North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the North West.
South America is home to The Amazon, which is the largest river (by volume) and The Amazon Rainforest, the largest rainforest. It is also home to The Andes, the longest mountain range, which passes through seven South American countries.
South America has evidence of agricultural practices that date back to 6500 BC and domesticating wild animals for food and wool in the highlands around 3500 BC. The first Europeans (Spanish and Portuguese) came to South America in the 1400's influencing the culture, language and religion.
Portuguese and Spanish are the most spoken languages in South America, each spoken by around 90% of the continent's population. Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, which holds nearly 50% of the South American population. Spanish is the official language of most countries of the continent.
South America's major mineral resources are gold, silver, copper, iron ore, tin and oil. The many resources of South America have brought high income to its countries, especially in times of war or of rapid economic growth by industrialized countries elsewhere.
