Sierra Leone is located on the west African coast and bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean on the west, Guinea on the north and east and Liberia on the south. Sierra Leone has a population of 5,866,000 people, 20 African ethnic groups make up 90% of this. The Sierra Leonean people speak Mende in the south and Tenne in the north but their official language is English. 60% of the population are Islamic.
About 1,070,200 people live in the capital city Freetown. It is chaotic and friendly with lovely beaches. However the effects of the civil war that raged for 10 years is evient. One of the most popular places to visit in Sierra Leone is the Banana Islands off the peninsula that Freetown in situated on. Here there are ruins of an 1881 church, some coral and a shipwreck which left cannons in the shallow water.

Sierra Leone has a total land area of 71,740 square kilometres. The terrain of Sierra Leone varies from mangrove swamps along the coast to wooded hill in the country and mountainous in the east. The highest peak is Mount Bintumani which rises to over 1945 metres and can be found in the Loma Mountains. Along the lower slopes of the Loma Mountains a wide variety of animals can be found such as the pygmy hippopotamuses, and dwarf crocodiles.
