General Information about Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a self governing commonwealth of the United States of America and is located in the Caribbean Sea. Puerto Rico is an archipelago which consists of the main island Puerto Rico and small islands such as Mona, Vieques and Culebra, as well as many keys. Puerto Rico has a population of almost 4 million people and is home to people of mainly Spanish origin. The official languages spoken in Puerto Rico are Spanish and English. The predominant religion in Puerto Rico is Roman Catholic but there are some Protestant followers. Puerto Rico's capital and largest city is San Juan and has a population of nearly 500,000 people. Founded in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city in Puerto Rico as well as being the oldest European-founded U.S. city.

San Juan is the home of Bacardi Rum. The Barcadi Rum factory is situated here in the Cataño neighbourhood and is a very popular tourist attraction. Known as 'The Rum Cathedral', the Bacardi Rum factory was built in Puerto Rico in 1936. Tours of the factory are free and include a trolley ride through the distillery and bottling plant, a museum and a rum cocktail.

Puerto Rico enjoys a tropical climate with little seasonal variation throughout the year. The best months to visit for perfect weather is inbetween November and May with minimal amounts of rain. If you are planning on visitng between June and November then care should be taken as this is hurricane season. The wet season begins in May and continues up until December with an annual average of up to 60 inches. The average temperature of Puerto Rico sits between 26 and 27 degrees with temperatures being cooler up in the highlands.


Geographical Information On Puerto Rico

Officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico is set in the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean just east of the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico has a total area of 13,790 square kilometres which includes 4,921 square kilometres of water. Puerto Rico is an archipelago with a coastline of just over 501 kilometres which is spread across all of Puerto Rico's islands. Some of the islands of Puerto Rico are Vieques, Culebra, Mona, Desecheo, Caja de Muertos as well as Monito and La Isleta de San Juan. Puerto Rico is filled with many mountains with many beautiful beaches across most of the islands.

The highest point of Puerto Rico is known as Cerro De Punta and referred to as Cerro Puntita. Cerro de Punta can be found at Jayuya which is in the centre of Puerto Rico, along the range of Cordillera Central and measures to just over 1,338 metres high. Found along the north coast of Puerto Rico is Rio de la Plata which is the longest river of the island group and originates in the town of Cayey which is set on the Central Mountain range which rises to almost 800 metres. Rio de la Plata flows for over 97 kilometres and almost stretches across the entire island.The lowest point of Puerto Rico is the Caribbean Sea at sea level.

Traditionaly the production of sugar was the main source of economy of the agricultural industry for Puerto Rico but has since been taken over by dairy production and livestock. The tourism industry is also a huge support to the economy with over five million tourists visiting the island in 2004. The industry sector contributes greatly to the economy with the main trades being production of pharmaceuticals, electronics, apparel, and food products. The most important exports of Puerto Rico are chemicals, electronics, canned tuna, rum, beverage concentrates and medical equipment. The official currency of Puerto Rico is the US Dollar.
