North America Travel Information
North America is the worlds third largest continent after Asia and Africa. Covering an area of approximately 24,250,000 sq km (9,365,000 sq miles), this is about 16.5 per cent of the world's total land area. North America comprises of Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, United States of America, as well as several US Minor Outlying Islands. Some definitions also include the countries of Central America and the Caribbean as part of North America and occassionally Greenland.
The population of North America is approximately 515,000,000. The main languages spoken are English, French and Spanish.
North America is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the North, the North Atlantic Ocean to the East, the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea to the South East, Central America to the South and the North Pacific Ocean to the West.
The highest point in North America is 6,194m (20,320ft), located at Mount McKinley within the Denali National Park in Alaska. The lowest point is -85m (-280ft) located at Death Valley within the Death Valley National Park in California. Death Valley also holds the record for the second highest temperature in the world and the highest temperature in the Western Hemisphere.
North America is also home to the Great Lakes, the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world. The Great Lakes are made up of Lake Superior (82,100 sq km), Lake Huron (59,600 sq km), Lake Michigan (57,800 sq km), Lake Erie (25,700 sq km), and Lake Ontario (19,500 sq km).
