General Information about Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is located in Western Africa between Guinea and Senegal, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the smallest countrys in Africa and has an approximate population of 1,472,780 with around 355,000 living in Bissau, the capital city of Guinea-Bissau. Over half of this population follow an African tribal religion and another 40% follow Islam. The official language spoken in Guinea-Bissau is Portuguese with other African languages such as Crioulo used at times.

Africa's only archipelago is found in Guinea-Bissau and is called Arquipélago Dos Bijagós. This island has beautiful beaches and national parks and is a great escape from busy mainand cities such as Bissau which has a great nightlife and many cultural sites.

April and May are the hottest months with average daily temperatures of 30 degrees, although the rain season does start in May ending in October. Guinea-Bissau has approximately 25 islands off the coast including the must see Bijagos archipelago which has around 88 islands and atolls. Guinea-Bissau is one of the 20 poorest countries in the world with around 60 percent of the economy coming from the agricultural industry. Rice and cashews are amongst the highest produces as well as a strong fishing industry. Guinea-Bissau's main natural resources are timber, bauxite and phosphate, and offshore petroleum. The official currency is the Communaute Financiere Africaine franc. Spain, India, Thailand and Italy are Guinea-Bissau's main export partners.
