General Information about Eritrea

Eritrea is found in Eastern Africa bordering Sudan, Ethiopa, Djibouti and the Red Sea. Eritrea has a population of 4,400,000 who speak Tigrinya, Arabic and some English. The population is equally divided 50%/50% Muslim and Chrisitian religions. Asmara, Eritrea's capital city has a reputation of being one of the safest capital cities in Africa and is located on the eastern edge of Eritrea's highland plateau.

The ruins in Qohaito are well worth a visit. One of the most popular sites in the Temple of Mariam Wakiro, which began as a Christian church. There are also ruins of other temples and just to the north is an underground Egyptian Tomb.

Eritrea has many climatic conditions and can experience up to three seasons within two hours largely due to the differences in altitude. Asmara the capital experiences yearly averages of 16 degrees and approximately 20 inches of rain each year. June through to September are the hottest months to visit with highs of 40+ degrees, while December to February are the wettest months to visit the coast of Massawa with averages of 20 to 30+ degrees.

Eritrea set in Eastern Africa was awarded to Ethiopia in 1952 but regained it's independence back in 1991 but officially announced their independence on 24 May 1993. The country's coastline measures up to 2,234 kilometres with a total landmass of 121,320 square kilometres. Eritrea is also situated in the Horn of Africa and its terrain mainly mountainous with many fertile valleys.

Since Eritrea's seperation from Ethiopia in 1993 the country's economy has gone through a constant battle and ranks amongst one of the poorest countries in the world. Most of the countries economy is derived from the agricultural industy with over 70 percent of the population being employed. The principal produces are lentils, vegetables, maize, cotton, tobacco, coffee, livestock and fish. They mainly export to Ethiopia, Sudan, Italy, Us and Saudi Arabia. The official currency is the Nafka.
