General Information about Cote d'Ivoire

Côte d'Ivoire, known in English as the Ivory Coast is located in West Africa and borders Liberia and Guinea to the west, Mali and Burkina to the north, Ghana to the east and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. There are around 18,700,000 people living in Cote d'Ivoire with Muslim being the most dominant religion. Yamoussoukro is the capital city but the largest city and economic capital of Cote d'Ivorie is Abidjan. In 1960 Cote d'Ivoire became independent from France however French remains the country's official lnguage.

Cote d'lvoire has a tropical climate with 3 distinct seasons, with a hot and dry season from March to May, hot and wet from June to October and warm and dry season from November through to March. July is the coolest month to visit with avearges of 29 degrees while along the coast November is the hottest month with averages of 35 degrees. The annual rainfall along the coast is approximately 200 centimetres.

Cote d'Ivoire has a coastline of 515 kilometres and a total landmass of 322,460 square kilometres and is a little bit bigger than New Mexico. The countryside is mainly flat although it is mountainous in the north west with it's highest point being Mount Nimba measuring up to 1,752 metres. Mount Nimba is also famous for its Chimpanzees. Cote d'Ivoire is also home to many endangered species such as Pygmy Hippopotamus, elephants, leopards, diana and colobus monkeys and antelopes. These can all be found at the Tai National Park which is covered in tropical forests near the cavally and Sassandra rivers.

Cote d'Ivoire is the world's largest procuder of cocoa, supplying up to 40 percent globally. Other important produces and exports are coffee, palm oil, palm kernels, corn, rice, manioc (tapioca), sugar, cotton and timber.

For a whole month everybody fasts between sunup and sunset and concludes with Eid al-Fitr which is a large feast.
