Caribbean Travel Information

The Caribbean is an area to the South of North America, East of Central America, and to the North of South America. It is made up of more than 7000 islands consisting of 28 separate territories made up of independent countries and dependent states. The Caribbean islands are an island chain 4,020 kilometres (2,500 miles) long and no more than 257 kilometres (160 miles) wide at any given point. The islands enclose the Caribbean Sea.

The population of the Caribbean is estimated to have been around 750,000 immediately before European contact. After contact, war and disease led to a decline in the Native American population. From 1500 to 1800 the population rose as slaves arrived from West Africa and immigrants from Britain, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The population is estimated to have reached 2.2 million by 1800. Immigrants from India, China, and other countries arrived in the 19th century. After the ending of the Atlantic slave trade the population continued to increase naturally, and was estimated at 37.5 million by 2000.

The climate mainly ranges from sub-tropical to tropical. The geography and climate in the Caribbean region varies from one place to another. Some islands in the region have relatively flat terrain with non-volcanic areas including Aruba, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Barbados, Bonaire, the Cayman Islands or Antigua. Other Islands have rugged mountain-ranges like the islands of Cuba, Dominica, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saba, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Saint Vincent, Guadeloupe, and Trinidad & Tobago.

A person from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian", although the phrase "Caribbean Person" is sometimes used. The Caribbean Islands are considered to be a conservation hotspot because they support such a wide range of ecosystems, which have a number of threatened species living in the region.
