Africa is the second largest continent both in land area and population, after Asia. Africa covers about 30,330,000 sq km (11,699,000 sq miles), which makes up about 22 per cent of the world's total land area.

Africa is considered to be the oldest inhabited continent by scientists, with fossil evidence dating back 7 million years. With about 922 million people in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.2% of the world's human population speaking over 1000 languages.

As the equator crosses the continent, it has numerous climatic zones from tropical to sub-arctic on its mountain peaks.

Africa has the World's Largest Desert, the Sahara, with an area greater than the Continental US. Africa is also home to The River Nile in North-Eastern Africa. At 6,650km (4,132 miles), it is the longest river in Africa and in the world.

The Namibia, Fish River Canyon can also be found in Africa. This is the second largest canyon in the world. Africa also holds the world's second-largest freshwater lake, covering an area of 69,490 sq km (26,830 sq miles) and lying 1,130m (3,720ft) above sea level. Its greatest known depth is 82m (270ft).

Africa is a continent of 53 independent countries and a rich mix of native people, cultures, economies and history. Almost completely encircled by water, Africa is home to vast deserts, tropical rain forests, rugged mountains and fertile grasslands.
