General Information about Harare

Harare is the capital and largest city of the African nation Zimbabwe and is situated north east of the centre of the country. The city of Harare was founded in 1890 by Pioneer Column who established it as a fort. The city was originally named Salisbury and became an official city in 1935. In April 1980, Zimbabwe gained independence with Salisbury as it's capital city. The name Salisbury was changed to Harare in 1982 and means 'he does not sleep' in English. Today the metropolitan Harare has a population of over 2.8 million people.

Harare has many attractions and places of interest such as Snake World, Lion & Cheetah Park, the National Gallery, the National Archives, the Anglican Cathedral and the African Unity Square. Other popular places to visit include Queen Victoria Museum, Queen Victoria National Library and The Mukluvisi Woodlands.

The National Gallery in Harare is located inside a well preserved colonial building that is over 100 years old. The gallery contains various exhibitions, both temporary and permanent of Zimbabwean artworks including paintings and sculptures. Artwork featured in the National Gallery include items by Jacques Callot, Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Thakor Patel and Tapfuma Gatsa.

The African Unity Square in the centre of Harare is where the British arrived in Zimbabwe and raised the Union Jack in 1890. Formerly known as Cecil Square, it was renamed African Unity Square following Zimbabwe's independence. Many gatherings and demonstrations have taken place here in Harare's past, but now the African Unity Square is home to trees, gardens and the Anglican Cathedral.
