Lusaka

General Information about Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia in Africa and is situated almost in the centre of the nation, between the Lower Zambezi National Park and the Zambezi River. Lusaka was primarily established by British settlers in 1905 when the railway was constructed. Lusaka became the capital city of Northern Rhodesia, a British colony in 1935 due to it's central location. Lusaka was named capital of Zambia after the nation gained independence in 1964. Today the city has a population of almost 1.1 million people and is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa.

Lusaka has many attractions such as the Lusaka National Museum, the Zintu Community Museum, the Freedom Statue, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the Munda Wanga Environmental Park, botanical gardens and a cenotaph.

The Munga Wanga Environmental Park in Lusaka is an educational and recreational centre that is frequented by, and popular with, locals and visitors. The wildlife park and sanctuary is home to 32 different species of birds, reptiles and mammals such as lions, tigers, bears, baboons, leopards, hyenas and hippos. The Munga Wanga Environmental Park is also helping to conserve the nations endangered species through captive breeding programmes. Recent species have been the African Painted Dog and the Kafue Lechwe, which is an antelope.
