TashkentGeneral Information about TashkentTashkent is the capital and largest city of the central Asian country Uzbekistan. Tashkent is located in the east of Uzbekistan where the Chimkent River merges several smaller river, west of the Altai Mountains. The area of Tashkent is believed to have originally been an oasis on the Chirchik River and inhabited since the 5th century BC. In the 16th century the city was named Tashkent (originally spelt Tashkand), meaning 'stone city' in Turkic. Today the city has a population close to 3 million people.
Tashkent features many monuments from the Soviet-era and museums. Many of the traditional buildings of the city were destroyed during the 1917 revolution and the 1966 earthquake which devestated Tashkent. The most visited places in Tashkent include the Kukeldash Madrassa, Chorsu Bazzar, Khast Imam Mosque, Yunus Khan Mausoleum, Palace of Prince Romanov, the Amir Timur Museum and the History Museum.
The Khast Imam Mosque, also known as the Telyashayakh Mosque, is one of the most famous sites in Tashkent as it houses the Uthman Qu'ran which is believed to be the oldest Qu'ran in the world. The Uthman Qu'ran, also referred to as Osman's Koran, dates from 655 and is stained wth the blood of the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan who was assassinated in 656.
Another of the most popular places to visit in Tashkent is the Palace of Prince Romanov. This palace, built in the centre of the city, was inhabited by Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich (cousin of Alexander III of Russia) after he was banished to Tashkent from Russia during the 19th century.
