Montevideo

General Information about Montevideo

Uruguay's capital city of Montevideo is of Portuguese origin and means 'I see a Hill'. Montevideo is home to approximately 1,326,000 people and was first inhabited back in the 17th century. Montevideo features a beautiful harbour as well as many amazing beaches.

There are many interesting places and museums to visit while at Montevideo. One of the most beautiful buildings in Montevideo is Palacio Salvo which as completed back in 1925. Palacio Salvo is over one hundred metres high and is used for offices and residential purposes. Not far from Palacio Salvo is the popular Plaza Independencia which is where you will come across many historical monuments such as the Gateway of The Citadel which was built in 1829.

If your a fan of the arts then a trip to the Solis Theatre should not be missed as it is the oldest theatre in Uruguay. Built in 1857 you will find the Solis Theatre within the Plaza Independencia.

There is so much to see and do in Montevideo with many beautiful museums, a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and trendy bars.
