Uruguay has a population of over 3,400,000 people. The official language spoken in Uruguay is Spanish but Portunol and Brazilero are also spoken. 66% of the Uruguayan population are Roman Catholic. There are also some Protestant and Jewish minorities. Uruguay's capital and largest city Montevideo is situated in the south of the nation on the coast of the Rio de le Plata and is the only city in Uruguay that is home to more than one million people.
At the centre of Montevideo's "old city" is the Plaza Independencia. This square features a statue of Uruguay's hero José Artigas as well as his tomb which is beneath it. The 3-in-1 library/house/art gallery Casa Rivera is also situated in the "old city". This house was built in 1802 and features many artifacts, treasures and paintings from Montevideo's past. Another famous building situated here is the Palacio Salvo which dates from 1925. This palace is over 100 metres tall and has 26 storeys. Palacio Salvo was once the tallest building in South America.
