Baltimore is located in the north east of the nation in the state of Maryland and has been home to many famous names such as Edgar Allan Poe, Babe Ruth, Tori Amos and Mama Cass Elliot. Baltimore is an independent city and a major seaport of the United States of America. The city has a population of over 640,900 people and has the 20th largest metrpolitan area in the country.
There are many places of interest and attractions in Baltimore such as Port Discovery, Fort McHenry, Baltimore Maritime Museum, Maryland Science Centre, Maryland Zoo, Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, Westminister Hall and Burying Ground and the Fort McHenry National Monument and HIstoric Shrine.
The Westminister Hall and Burying Ground is a graveyard which was established in 1786 by the First Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. Many prominant people of Baltimore have are buried here, but the most famous grave is that of short story writer, editor and critic Edgar Allan Poe who was buried here after his mysterious death in 1849. His original site is marked with a headstone with an engraved raven, but he was reburied at the front of the cemetery under a marble monument which was erected in 1875. His wife and aunt are also buried here.
The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is one of the most visited places in Baltimore. This is star-shaped fort saved the city from the British in 1812 during the Battle of Baltmore. Whilst the fort was being bombed, prisoner Francis Scott Key saw the American flag still waving and wrote a poem untitled 'Defence of Fort McHenry'. Later on, this poem would become known as 'The Star-Spangled Banner' and used as the national anthem for the United States of America.
