General Information about Tunis

Tunis is the largest city in Tunisia and is the capital of both the nation and the Tunis Governorate. Tunis is situated in the north east of Tunisia on the Gulf of Tunis which flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Tunis has a long history, first occupied in the 2nd millenium BC by the Berbers and called Tunes, the city has been under various control such as Numidian, Phoenician, Roman, Muslim and French. Today Tunis is home to an estimated 2 million people.

Tunis is divided into two parts, the Medina (old city) and Ville Nouvelle (modern city). There are many landmarks and places of interest in both parts of the city such as the Djemaa ez Zitouna Mosque, Bey's Palace, the Bardo Museum and the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul. There are also various other mosques and mausoleums in Tunis.

In medina (old town) is the Djemaa ez Zitouna Mosque, or Olive-Tree Mosque, which is one of the most important mosques in all of Tunisia. Construction began on the mosque by the Omayyads in 732 then was completely rebuilt in 864 by the Aghlabids. Since then many features have been added and renewed such as the dome over the central bay, the library, the vestibule and the minaret.

The Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul in Ville Nouvelle is the largest remaining building of Tunis' colonial period. This neo-romanesque cathedral is situated near the gates of the Oriental old town and houses the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Just west of Tunis is Le Bardo which is home to the Bardo Museum. This museum has the largest collection of Roman mosaics in the world and is one of the greatest museums in northern Africa.
