DjerbaGeneral Information about DjerbaWith an area of 514 square kilometres, Djerba is the largest island in North Africa. Djerba is part of the nation Tunisia and is located just off the coast of the country in the Gulf of Gabes. The main town on the island Djerba is Houmt-Souq which has a population of more than 60,000 people. The town of Ajim, also on the island, is famous as being the filming location of Mos Eisley, the ficitonal town in Tattoine, featured in the 1977 Star Wars film.
There are many interesing places to visit on the island Djerba such as the city Houmt-Souq and other towns Ajim and Guellala. Some of the attractions that are found in Houmt-Souq are Borj Ghazi Mustapha, Old Town, Strangers Mosque, Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions and various Souqs (Markets).
Borj Ghazi Mustapha is the old fort pf Houmt-Souq on Djerba island. It is located about 600 metres from the Mosques of the Turks on the coast of the island. The fort was originally built in the 13th century by the Aragonese, and then extended in the 16th century. In 1560 Borj Ghazi Mustapha was the site of a massacre when Dragut's turkish fleet attacked the Spanish. A monument stands at the fort in memory of those who fought and died during the massacre. The fort also contains a small mosques and scattered mounds of cannonballs made fron both iron and stone.
Old Town is most visited because of it's traditional Djerban architecture, prominently the white walled houses and domes scattered along the skyline. The most well known buildings in Houmt-Souq are the funduqs, or inns, which were where traveling merchants stopped in the city during Ottoman times. In those times the funduqs were two storeys high, the top for the humans the bottom floor for their animals. Today some of the funduqs have been transformed into Djerban's most popular hotels.
