General Information about Phuket

Nickmaned 'The Pearl of the South', Phuket is the largest city on the Phuket Island of Thailand. The city is situated on the south east coast of the island and is the capital of the Phuket Province, whch covers the whole island of Phuket. Phuket City was built in the mid 19th century to replace the old town of Phalang which had been destroyed by the Burmese in the 1800's. Today the city is home to more than 75,500 people and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand.

Among the most popular attractions of the city of Phuket are the beaches which attract an abundance of visitors each year. Some of the most frequented beaches include Karon Beach, Kata Noi Beach and Kata Beach. Other interesting places to visit include the Phuket Culture Museum, the Chinese Temples and Wat Chalong.

Put Jaw Temple is the oldest Chinese Taoist temple in Phuket and dates back over 200 years. Put Jaw is dedicated to Kwun Im, the Godess of Mercy. The larger of the temples, Jui Tui is the more modern of the two and is conjoined with the Put Jaw Temple. Tradition at the temples is to throw two mango-shaped pieces in the air infront of the altar and ask a question. If they both land the same side up the answer is no, whereas if they land different sides up the answer is yes.

Officially called Wat Chaitararam, Wat Chalong is one of the most famous Buddist temples in Phuket. It is believed that the temple was first constructed during the reign of King Rama II between 1809 and 1842. Since then it has been resored and relocated to it's current position. One of the most important stautes in Wat Chalong is Poh Than Jao Wat which is located in the west of the temple. But the main attraction of Wat Chalong is the Grand Pagoda which contains a splinter of Lord Buddha's bone.
