Bangkok has many interesting places to visit including many temples such as The Wat Phra Kaeo which features an emerald Buddha, and the largest and oldest temple in Bangkok; the Wat Pho. Wat Pho is home to the enormous Reclining Buddha which measures 46metres long and 15metres high. Thailand which was originally known as Siam up until 1939 but was officially changed by the government between 1945 and 1949. The word Thai means 'freedom' in the Thai language while many believe it to mean 'Land of the Free'. Thailand covers a total 514,000 square kilometres of land which includes over 2,230 square kilometres of water. Thailand borders upon two oceans for over 3,219 kilometres along the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Thailands terrain is mostly mountainous in the north, while the terrain in the north east is known as Khorat Plateau which is at an elevation of 200 metres and is shaped like a saucer. Khorat Plateau tilts towards the south east and flows into the Mun and Chi river. The highest point in Thailand is Doi Inthanon which was named in honour of King Inthawichayanon who was one of the last kings of Chiang Mai. Originally known as Doi Luang which simply meant 'Big Mountain'. Doi Inthanon rises to over 2,565 metres and can be found in the Shan Hills. Thailand is the 49th largest country in the world. EconomyLearn About The Economy In ThailandThailand has a well developed infrastructure as well as a free-enterprise economy. Thailand's economy heavily dependent on exports with accounts for over 60 percent of Thailand's GDP. Thailand mainly exports textiles, footwear, fishery products, rice, rubber, automobiles, jewelry, computers and electrical appliances. The agriculture industry contributes least to the economy with only 10 percent while it employs over 49 percent of the population. Some of the main produces of Thailand are rice, tapioca, rubber, corn, coconuts and soybeans. The service industry and the industry sector both provide similar amounts to the economy while the service industry employs more than 37 percent of the population. Thailand's unemployment rate was at a low of 2.1 percent in 2006 with only ten percent of the population living below the poverty line. The official currency of Thailand is the Baht.
