Chiang Mai

General Information about Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the fifth largest city in Thailand as well as the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand. The city is situated 700 kilometres north of Bangkok, on the Ping River and is the capital of the Chiang Mai Province. Chaing Mai was founded in 1296 by King Mengrai and became the capital of the Lannathai Kingdom. The most common language spoken in Chiang Mai is Kham Muang (also known as Northern Thai) but Central Thai is also spoken. The city is home to more than 700,000 people, nearly half the total population of the Chiang Mai Province.

There are many interesting attractions in Chiang Mai such as the Chiang Mai National Museum, Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai Night Safari, Anusawari Sam Kasat Bronze Sculptures and Devi Mandir Chiang Mai. The city is also home to more than 300 Buddist temples including Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Wat Chiang Mai and Wat Phra Singh.

The Chiang Mai National Museum is the main museum in the north of Thailand. The museum was opened in February 1973 by the King and Queen of Thailand and is designed in the style of a traditional Thai building, with a Lanna style rooftop. Some of the most important items on display in the museum include the Bronze Head of Buddha, Lord Buddha's Footprint with mother-of-pearl inlay, the San Kamphaeng Ceramic and various tools used by the ancient hill tribes.

The most famous Buddist temple, or Wat, in Chiang Mai is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep which is said to have been founded in 1383. The temple is located 15 kilometres outside the Chiang Mai city, on top of the Doi Suthep mountain. The Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is a landmark of Thailand and a very important place of worship and sacred site for the Thai people and is famous for it's large gold-plated chedi which is visible from Chiang Mai city on a clear day. It is believed that the Doi Suthep hilltop was chosen as the site of the temple by the White Elephant who was carrying the shoulder bone of Buddha.
