Dodoma

General Information about Dodoma

Dodoma is the capital and the third largest city of Tanzania. Dodoma is also the capital city of the Dodoma region. Dodoma was founded during the German colonial rule of East Africa, around the time the Tanzanian central railway was constructed. The British then took control of the city during World War I and it became the administrative centre of Tanzania. In 1973 Dodoma replaced Dar es Salaam as the capital city of Tanzania and it is now home to more than 324,300 people.

Dodoma has many attractions and places of interest including Ujiji, Mahale Mountains National Park, the Kondoa Iranqi Rock Paintings, the Gombe Stream National Park, the Katavi National Park, Kigoma, Morogoro and Tabora.

Ujiji is one of the oldest market towns in Africa that was originally a slave trade town settled by the Arabs. Ujiji is world famous as the meeting place of Henry Morton Stanley and Dr David Livingstone in 1871. There is a plaque here in Ujiji marking their meeting place. Also in Ujiji is the Livingstone Museum which contains pictures of the meeting between the two men drawn by locals as well as other drawings and books.

The Kondoa Iranqi Rock Paintings situated on the Great North Road between Dodoma and Arusha are reminders of times when man lived in ancient Tanzania. The rock paintings depict animals and human way of life, those with most historical importance date back 30,000 years.
