ArushaGeneral Information about ArushaLocally known as 'A Town', Arusha is one of the most developed and fastest growing cities in Tanzania. The city is located in the north east of the nation, about 330 kilometres north east of Tanzania's capital city Dodoma and 480 kilometres north west of the nation's largest city Dar es Salaam. Arusha is situated at the base of Mount Meru and is surrounded by many famous African sites including Mount Kilimanjaro. Arusha has a population of almost 271,000 people.
There are many interesing sites to see and places to visit in Arusha such as the School of St Jude, Arusha National Park, National Natural History Museum, Meserani Snake Park, Lake Duluti and the Arusha Declaration Museum.
Although it is one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania, Arusha's National Park is one of the most popular to visit. It is located around Mount Meru, Ngurdoto Crater and the seven Momela Lakes. The two main areas of the park are connected by a narrow strip known as the Momela Gate and altitude throughout the park varies between 1500 metres and 4500 metres above sea level. Many animals call the Arusha National Park such as zebras, giraffes, hippos, elephants, hyenas and black and white Colobus monkeys.
The National Natural History Museum is housed in the old German Boma which was built in 1886 for administration purposes during the colonial era. The museum has two exhibition halls which feature permanent displays on entomology and human evolution. One of the main highlights of the museum are the Laetoli Footprints which were discovered in the late 1970's by Andrew Hill.
