Tajikistan

General Information about Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a landlocked country found in Central Asia and is bordered to the west by Uzbekistan, to the north by Kyrgyzstan, to the east by China and to the south by Afghanistan. Tajikistan is a very mountainous country with the ancient Silk Road (crossing Asia from China to Europe) running through it.

Tajikistan has a population of over 7,000,000 people with about 525,000 of these living in Tajikistan's capital city Dushanbe. 90% of the country's population are Muslim, either following Sunni Muslim or Shi'a Muslim beliefs. Tajik is the nations official language but Russian is widely spoken in business or government matters.

Dushanbe is situated in Tajikistan's west and is home to the Vahdat Palace or Palace of Unity which is used to hold international conferences. Also in Dushanbe are many museums and the Haji Yakoub Mosque. A few hours from Dushanbe is The Fannsky Gory, or Fan Mountains. This is Tajikistan's most popular attractions for trekking and hiking and also has wonderful views.

Tajikistan experiences a sharp continental, subtropical climate with hot summers and cold winters, although the conditions do alter with the altitude changes. January is the coolest month to visit with temperatures going as low as minus 15 to minus 20 degrees with daily averages of -1 to 3 degrees. Within the mountainous regions temperatures can go as low as -45 degrees. July is the warmest month to visit with averages of 30 degrees with highs of 35 degrees. Most of the rainfall in Tajikistan occurs during the summer months.

Set in Central Asia, Tajikistan is a small country with a total landmass of 143,100 square kilometres which includes 400 square kilometres of water with no coastline to boast about. There are two main ranges in Tajikistan which are known as Pamir Mountains and the Alay Mountains. The Pamir Mountains are located in Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Tajikistan shares the Alay Mountains with Kyrgyzstan and is often confused with the Altai Mountains. The highest peak in Tajikistan is known as Ismoil Somoni Peak although it was originally known as Peak Communism.
Measuring over 7,495 metres Ismoil Somoni Peak is the 50th largest mountain in the world and was first climbed in 1933 by Soviet mountaineer Yevgeniy Abalakov. The lowest point in Taijikistan is known as Syr Darya at just 300 metres.

Economy

Out of the 15 former Soviet republics Tajikistan has one the poorest econmies. In 2006 the agricultural industry contributed over 23 percent of the economy while employing over 67 percent of the population. Cotton is the main agricultural product and natural resources are limited with silver, gold, uranium and tungsten being the found in minimal quantites. The service industry is the main contributor to the economy with a contribution of over 49 percent with the industry sector sitting on 28 percent while employing just 7.5 percent. The main exports of Tajikistan is aluminum, electricity, cotton, fruits, vegetable oil and textiles. The unemployment rate in 2004 was at a high of 12 percent with over 64 percent of the population living below the poverty line. The official currency of Tajikistan is the Somoni.
