Syria

General Information about Syria

Syria is located in the Middle East and is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, Israeli to the southwest and Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Syria has a population of over 20 milllion people. The official language spoken in Syria is Arabic but Kurdish, Armenian and Aramaic is also spoken. Circassian is widely understood and some Syrians have an understanding of English and French. 90% of the Syrian population are Muslim. The most commonly followed branch is Sunni Muslim. There is also a small following of Christianity as well as some small Jewish communities.

Syria claims to have the two oldest continuously occupied cities in the world, Damascus (the capital and largest city of Syria) and Aleppo). Damascus is a very popular place to visit in Syria as it is home to the Azem Palace and the Umayyad Mosque. The Azem Palace was built by As'ad Pasha al-Azem, the governor of Damascus in 1749. The Umayyad Mosque was tranformed from a Greek temple to a Roman temple, to a church, to a church and mosque then finally to a mosque and contains the grave of John the Baptist (or Muslim prophet Yahya). There are three minarets that date back to it's original construction as well as many golden mosiacs. Women are required to wear grey robes (which are supplied) whilst inside the Umayyad Mosque.

Temperatures in the desert and steppe are usually high with arid summers. Temperatures during the winter months average around 21 degrees to below freezing. Syria's capital Damascus experiences hot summers with highs of 43 degrees with August being the warmest month to visit. Januray is more pleasant with temperatures ranging between 16 and minus four degrees. Rainfall occurs most in the mountainous regions with some areas receiving as much as 50 inches while along the coastal parts the average sits at 30 inches.

Syria which is officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic is set in the Middle East with a total area of 185,180 square kilometres which includes 1,130 square kilometres of water. This area also includes 1,295 square kilometres of Israeli occupied territory. Syria's coastline borders the Mediterranean Sea for over 193 kilometres. The terrain of Syria is mostly desert, plains, and mountains which takes up almost 185,180 square kilometres. The highest point in Syria is known as Mount Hermon which rises to over 2,814 metres and can be located in the Anti-Lebanon mountain range. Mount Hermon is often known as 'Mountain of the Chief' and 'Snowy Mountain'. The lowest point of Syria remains unnamed today and is 200 metres below sea level near the Sea of Galilee. The longest river of Syria is known as Euphrates and is approximately 2,800 kilometres long and flows through Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran.

The economy of Syria mainly revolves around the agricultural industry and its service industry. Syria is a middle income earning country with a workforce of over 5.457 million. The main agricultural produces are wheat, barley, cotton, lentils, chickpeas, olives, and sugar beets. The main industry trades are petroleum, textiles, food processing, beverages, tobacco, phosphate rock mining, cement, and oil seeds crushing. Syria mainly exports crude oil, petroleum products, fruits and vegetables, cotton fibre, clothing, meat, live animals and wheat. The official currency of Syria is the Syrian Pound.
