The official language spoken in Suriname is Dutch. English is also widely spoken as well as Sranang Tongo (a Surinamese language sometimes referred to as Taki-Taki). There four primary religions followed in Suriname are Hindu, Protestant, Muslim and Roman Catholic. The capital and largest city of Suriname is Paramaribo is located on the coast of the North Atlantic Ocean and is home to almost half of Suriname's population.
There are many attractions in Suriname such as Onafhankelijkheidsplein (or Independence Square) which is surrounded by the 18th century Presidential Palace and features a statue of former president Johan 'Jopie' Pengel and Surinaams Museum which is situated inside Fort Zeelandia, built in 1667. This museum features both Pre-Columbian artifacts and colonial-era relics. Paramaribo also has the Neveh Shalom Synagogue, where the oldest American Jewish community has been worshipping since the early 1700's. Neveh Shalom translates to 'House of Peace' and the building here has been used since 1842. The largest mosque is situated right next door to the Neveh Shalom Synagogue.
