Khartoum

General Information about Khartoum

Khartoum is the capital city of Sudan and the Khartoum State of Sudan. Khartoum is also the second largest city in the country and is located at the point where the White Nile and the Blue Nile merge to form The Nile. In 1821 Khartoum was founded by Ibrahim Pasha, adopted son of Muhammad Ali, and used as an outpost for the Egyptian Army. Khartoum became the capital of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in 1899, then the capital of independent Sudan in 1956. Today Khartoum has a population of well over one million people.

There are many attractions and places of interest in Khartoum including the National Museum of Sudan, the Presidential Palace, Al Kabir Mosque, the World War II Cemetary, the Palace Museum and most famously the Mogran, where the White Nile and Blue Nile merge to create The Nile.

The National Museum of Sudan is one of Khartoum's most popular attractions and is the biggest museum in all of Sudan. This museum contains works and artefacts from various parts of Sudan's history, including the two Egyptian temples of Buhen and Semna which were originally constructed by Pharaoh Tuthmosis III and Queen Hatshepsut at Lake Nassar. After the lake flooded in the 1970's, the temples were moved to the museum.

The Mogran, or Confluence of the While and Blue Nile, features many attractions such as gardens and greenery, an amusement park and of course the merge of the two Niles. From the old metal bridge that connects Khartoum to neighbouring city Omdurman it is possible to see the two Niles merging, including the different colours of the waters. The Confluence of the White and Blue Nile takes place along Nile Strret, 3-4 kilometres away from the Presidential Palace.
