General Information about Kandy

The city of Kandy which is located in the heart of Sri Lanka can be found with within the district of the same name. Kandy which is thought to have been inhabited since 1257 C.E was originally known as Sekadagalapura. Kandy is closely neighboured by Galagedara and Peradeniya with the closest major city being Colombo. Kandy is home to over 110,000 residents and is set at an elevation of 1,640 feet.

Kandy offers its visitors a wide variety of interesting sites and historical monuments and is fact listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. One of Kandy's most well known historical buildings is The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa the temple is a sacred place to visit and is of particular beauty in the evenings as it shimmers and glows in the dark.

Also worth visiting is the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya which covers a massive space of 147 acres and boasts hundreds of variety's of orchids and other fascinating plants. The best way of travelling to Kandy is either via bus or train with regular trains arriving from Colombo.
