South Pacific Travel Information

South Pacific is the smallest of the world's continents and is generally considered to be made up of country and island groups including Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia and neighbouring islands in the Pacific Ocean. The South Pacific contains 29 countries and dependent states covering approximately 9,000,000 sq km (3 475 000 sq miles), with a population of about 35.8 million.

Along with Antarctica, South Pacific is the only continent that is completely surrounded by water. The other continents are all connected, in some part, to another continent. The largest country in the South Pacific is Australia.

There is a varying climate experienced across the region ranging from a tropical climate nearer the equator, to the harsher winters in Southern New Zealand.

The South Pacific is sometimes called Oceania, and is a highly diverse region. From the vast dry bush land of Western Australia to the dense rain forest of the tiny Solomon Islands, the South Pacific includes mountains, jungles and swamplands.

Australasia is another term that is variably used to describe a region of Oceania, incorporating Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and neighboring islands in the Pacific Ocean. Geopolitically, Australasia is sometimes used as a term for Australia and New Zealand together, in the absence of another word limited to those two countries. There are many organisations whose names are prefixed with "(Royal) Australasian Society", that are limited to just New Zealand and Australia.
