General Information about South Korea

South Korea is located in eastern Asia and is bordered by North Korea to the north, the Yellow Sea to the west, and the Sea of Japan and Korean Strait to the east. Until 1945 South Korea and North Korea were a united country. South Korea has a population of over 49,000,000 people with over 10 million people living in the capital city Seoul.

Korean is the official language spoken in South Korea but English is taught in most primary and high schools so is sometimes understood. Christian and Buddist religions are the most commonly followed but almost half of South Korea's population are not religious.


In Seoul the ancient temples and palaces are overshadowed by the highrises and 12 lane freeways. One of the grandest ancient sites to visit is thee The Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul which was built in the 1500's but burnt down by the Japanese upon their invasion. For almost 300 years the palace was left in ruins before being reconstruction started in 1865. Seoul is also a major city for shopping. There are many stores selling a wide varity of products so there is something for everyone.

South Korea has a temperate climate with four chief seasons with hot humid summers and winters going below freezing. If your planning on visiting during July and August be prepared for high levels of rain and warm weather, as these are the hottest and wettest months of the year. January is the coolest month with averages ranging between minus seven degrees and one degree. July is the warmest month with averages of 22 to 29 degrees although rainfall is high. The best times to visit is in Spring and Autumn with mild and mostly dry weather.

Set in Eastern Asia, along the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, South Korea has a total landmass of 98,480 square kilometres which includes 290 square metres. South Korea's coastline extends for over 2,413 kilometres along the Korea Stait, Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. The terrain of South Korea is mainly mountainous and hilly wil wide coastal plains in the west and south. South Korea has three main mountain ranges known as the Taebaek Mountains, the Sobaek randges and the Jiri Massif. The highest point in South Korea is Hallasan which rises to over 1,950 metres and is a massive volcanic shield. Also known as Halla Mountain or Mount halla the shield volcano can be located on Jeju Island. The lowest point in South Korea is the Sea of Japan at sea level.

The service industry in South Korea is the largest support the economy with a contribution of over 57 percent while employing over 67 percent of the population. Closely followed is the industry sector on 39 percent with the agricultural industry being last on just over 3 percent. The poverty line in South Korea sits on 15 percent with an unemployment rate of 3 percent. The main exports of South Korea are semi conductors, wireless telecommunications equipment, motor vehicles, computers, steel, and ships. The official currency of South Korea is the South Korean Won.
