Johannesburg

General Information about Johannesburg

South Africa's beautiful city of Johannesburg was first established as a city back in 1886 and is the capital of the Gauteng Province. Home to over 3,888,200 residents, Johannesburg is in fact South Africa's largest and most populated city. Johannesburg is set at an elevation of 1,753 metres and is well known for its prosperous diamond and gold excavations. Johannesburg is also home to many important residents such as Nelson Mandela who lives within the exclusive suburb of Houghton.

As soon as you arrive in the remarkable city you will notice Johannesburg's two television towers. The Hillbrow Tower rises to 269 metres while the Sentech Tower is slightly shorter at 237 metres. These towers do have observation decks but have been closed to the public since 1981. Despite this the towers still remain one of the city's most well known landmarks.

There are plenty of attractions worth visiting while you are visiting Johannesburg with a variety of museums and art gallery's. If you have children to entertain then a trip to the Johannesburg Zoo is the ideal destination with over 3,000 species of animals.

If you are interested in Nelson Mandela then be sure to ask for directions to the Nelson Mandela National Museum. Set in the former presidents former home you will be able to learn a great deal about this remarkable man. The Apartheid Museum is also worth visiting and is open everyday.

For entertainment visiting the Market Theatre is a must which boasts three theatres and two galleries in total. You can also relax in one of the many bars and restaurants while enjoying a fine selection of jazz.

Getting to Johannesburg is simple with regular flights landing at the OR Tambo International Airport. Johannesburg is also easily accessed throught the rail and bus system with regular trains arriving from Durban, Cape Town, Kimberley, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Nelspruit Polokwane, East London and Pietermaritzburg.
