South Africa is the southern most mainland country in Africa. It is situated below Nambia, Botswana, Mozambique and Swaziland and entirely surrounds the country of Lesotho. South Africa borders these countries and both the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. South Africa has a population of just under 44,000,000 around 79% of which are of black African ethnicity.


There are 11 official languages spoken in South Africa; Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXosha and isiZulu. Most commonly used of these are isiZulu, isiXosha and Afrikaans.

The capital city of South Africa is Pretoria. Johannesburg is one of the most popular cities in South Africa to visit. Here the very wealthy live side by side with the poverty stricken and is the perfect place to get an understanding of life in this country. One of the most relaxed South African cities to visit is Cape Town. This beautiful city has wonderful beaches, landscapes, culure and animal life.

Along the mountains in Lesotho is the longest river of South Africa which flows for over 2,200 kilometres. Much of the terrain in South Africa is full of rugged hills and narrow coastal plains with vast interior plateau.

South Africa's agricultural industry only contributes to 3 percent of the economy although it employs 30 percent of the population. The offical currency of South Africa is the Rand.
