BloemfonteinGeneral Information about BloemfonteinBloemfontein is the judicial capital of South Africa and the capital of the Free State province. Bloemfontein was officially discovered by Henry Douglas Warden in 1846 and used as a British outpost for the military despite various Afrikaner groups already settled in the area. In 1892, famous author J.R.R. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein. Today the city has a population of 369,500 people.
Bloemfontein has a number of places of interest and attractions such as the Anglican Cathedral, the First and Fouth Raadsaals, the National Museum, Naval Hill, the National Women's Memorial and the only Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa with two spires, the Two-Spired Church which was built in 1880 and modeled on Germany's Bamberg Cathedral.
On the south side of Bloemfontein is the National Women's Memorial which is a 37 metre tall obelisk built in honour of the 26,000 women and children who died in British concentration camps during the Boer War. The base of the monument contains the ashes of Emily Hobhouse, an Englishwoman who campaigned for better conditions for the detainees.
The First Raadsaal in Bloemfontein, constructed in 1849 is the oldest building in the city. Today a museum of Bloemfontein's history, the First Raadsaal has been everything from a school, to a meeting place, to a church. The Fourth Raadsaal, completed in 1893 is a Renaissance style building featuring a dome and Ionic columns. This building is now the seat of the Provincial Council for the Free State province of South Africa but once held parliamentary sessions.
