The islands of Samoa are located halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand and have a population of just over 214,000 people. The official languages spoken in Samoa are Samoan (Polynesian) and English. Most Samoan's are Congregationalists. Other religions followed include Roman Catholic, Methodist, Latter-Day Saints and Seventh-Day Adventist. Samoa's capital and largest city is Apia which is situated on the northern coast of the Upolu Island and is home to almost 39,000 people. This is the only city and Samoa and is the nation's major port.
Mulinu'u in the central north coast of Upolu in Samoa is where the Samoan Parliament House is situated as well as the Lands and Tiles Court and a meteorology office that was established in the 180o's as an observatory. Also at the penisular of Mulinu'u are several important tombs, including that of former Head of State, Malietoa Tanumafili II. Also in Apia are the graves of Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson who died here in the late 1890's, and his wife Fanny Osbourne. Lake Lanoto'o, also known as Goldfish Lake is a green lake full of wild goldfish and leeches that is a great place for a swim. It is unknown how deep the lake is as no one has ever found the bottom.
