Panama

General Information about Panama

Panama is the southern most country in Central America and is located on the land bridge that connects North America and South America. Panama borders Costa Rica to the northwest, the Caribbean Sea to the north, Columbia to the southeast and the North Pacific Ocean to the south. Panama also controls one of the most important shipping routes in the world, the Panama Canal, which links the North Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea.

Panama has a population of about 3,100,000 people, with over 700,000 peopleliving in Panama's capital city Panama City, which is situated on the Pacific enterance of the Panama Canal. The official language spoken in Pana is Spanish but English is widely understood and some Panamanian people are bilingual. Over 80% of Panamanian's are Roman Catholic and there is also a growing Protestant following.

The Parque Arqueológico del Caño is one of the two achaeological sites in Panama that are open to the public. This site contains a museum featuring artifacts believed to belong to those who lived in El Ca?o over 1500 years ago as well as an excavation pit that contains a burial site withskeletons. Panama City is a popular place to visit which is home to many attractions such as the Plaza de Francia, the Paseo de las Bóvedas and the San José Church.

There are many upland plains with the coastal aeas featuring large plains and rolling hills. Panama's coastlines are known as the Caribbean or Atlantic and Pacific instead of just the north and south coasts. The highest point of Panama is known as Volcan Baru and rises to over 3,474 metres. Originally known as Volcan de Chiriqui, Volcan Baru is a dormant volcano with the last major eruption occuring in 500 AD. Volcan Baru be found on the Continental Divide in western Chiriqui Province.

The service industry is the most important contributor to the economy of Panama and contributes over 77 percent of the economy while employing over 67 percent of the population. The most important contributors to the service industry include the Panama Canal, banking, insurance, container ports, flagship registry and the tourism industry. The main exports to come out of Panama are bananas, prawns, sugar, coffee, and clothing. The official currency of Panama is the Panamanian Ballboa and the US dollar.
