Melekeok

General Information about Melekeok

Melekeok which can be found on Palau's largest island of Babeldaob has been the island group's capital since 2006. Melekeok covers a total area of approximately 28 square kilometres and is home to just over 200 people.

Koror which was the original capital of Palau is home to over 70 percent of the island's population and also features a variety of hotesls and motels. Also found in Melekeok is the largest freshwater lake in all of Micronesia. Lake Ngardok covers a total area of 493 hectares and is home to a variety of wildlife as well as freshwater crocodiles.

English is the most popular language spoken in Melekeok although you will hear the local Palauan being spoken. The Palau International Airport is situated just 25 kilometres away from Melekeok and just 4 kilometres away from Koror.
