The Netherlands Antilles are five islands located in the Caribbean Sea that are dependencies of the Kingdom Of The Netherlands. The Netherlands Antilles are split into two groups of islands, the Leeward Islands consisting of Sint Maarten, Saba, and St. Eustatius and the Windward Islands consisting of Curacao and Bonaire. The island of Sint Maarten is shared with the French nation of Saint Martin. To avoid confusion, the regions of the island are generally referred to as 'the Dutch side' and 'the French side'.
The capital city of the Netherlands Antilles, Willemstad lies on the island of Curacao which is the largest and most populated of the Netherlands Antilles islands. The total population of the Netherlands Antilles is estimated to be around 220,000 people. Over 70% of the Dutch Antillean population are Roman Catholics. The minority religions are Pentecostal, Protestant, Seventh-Day Adventist, Mehtodist, Jewish, Jehovah's Witness and other branches of Christianity.
Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands Antilles but the most common language spoken throughtout the islands is Papiamento (a Spanish-Portuguese-Dutch-English dialect). English and Spanish are also widely understood.
