Nepal

General Information about Nepal

Nepal is located in southern Asia and landlocked between Indian and the Tibetan region of China which is separated from Nepal by the Great Himalayan Range. Nepal has 8 of the10 tallest mountains in the world including Mount Everest.

Around 28,900,000 people live in Nepal, with about 700,000 people living in it's capital city Kathmandu. Hindu is followed by over 80% of Nepal's population making Nepal the only Hindu state in the world. Nepali is the official language spoken by the Nepalese. Many other local dialects are also spoken and many of the Nepalese business people and government officials speak English.

One of Nepal's main attractions is Mount Everest. It is 8,848 metres above sea level and over 3 thousand people have climbed to it's summit. Mount Everest is both a wonderful sight and a great climb for the adventerous. For the less adventerous are the beautiful national parks such as Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and the Royal Chitwan National Park which is famous for it's Elephant safaris.

The climate of Nepal is mainly sub-tropical and tropical and is greatly influenced by elevation. There are four main seasons with warm summers and cool winters. The summer months last from June until August with averages of 28 degrees with as much as 40 degrees within the hill regions. Monsoon season begings in June and lasts until the middle of September. Winter begins in December and lasting until February with averges of 7 degrees in the Terai region, while in the valleys temperatures fall below freezing with a maximum of 12 degrees. At altitudes above 16,000 feet the weather is always below freezing with snow and ice being common.

Set in Southern Asia, Nepal has a total land area of 147,181 square metres which includes 4,000 square metres of water. Nepal can be divided into four physiographic areas of the Mountain, the Siwalik Region, Hill and the Terai Regions. The Hill region is mainly made up of land that is 600 metres to 1,800 metres above sea level, while the Terai Regions is marshy grasslands, with forests at the base of the Himalaya's. The Siwalik Region can be located between the Mahabharat and Chure mountain range and is mainly highlands. Large deposits of calcium carbonate, as well as iron, sulfur and copper can be found here.

Along the Northern part of Nepal is the highest mountain in the world which Nepal shares with China. Mount Everest which is also called Chomolungma or Qomolangma which means 'Mother of Earth' and extends for over 8,848 metres. Along side the Mount Everest is the fourth largest mountain in the world known as Mount Lhotse which rises to over 8,516 metres. It is the gap between the two mountains where most climbers atempt to climb Mount Everest, otherwise known as South Col. It can take as long as three months to climb Mount Everest where the conditions are extremly difficult with more than 200 deaths on the mountain being recorded. The first person to climb Mount Everest was Edmund Hillary on the 29th of May 1953 who passed away in 2007. Nepal is also home to Makalu, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu which are amongst the top ten tallest mountains in the world.

Nepal has a very poor economy and is amongst the poorest in the world. The agricultural industry is the main support of income contributing over 38 percent of the economy while employing over 76 percent of the population. Over thirty percent of the population in Nepal are living below the poverty line with over 40 percent of the population being unemployed.. Nepal mainly exports carpets, clothing, leather goods, grains and jute goods which is a natural fibre similar to cotton. The Industry sector in Nepal provides over 20 percent of the economy, which includes the tourism industry. Nepal receives economic aid from many countries around the globe with as much as $427.9 million in 2005. The official currency of Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee.
