MaputoGeneral Information about MaputoMaputo is the capital and largest city of the African country Mozambique. Maputo is located in the south of the nation on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Originally named Lourenco Marques upon it's founding in 1876, the city became Mozambique's capital in 1898. The city's name was later changed to Maputa after the ancient tribal leader Maputo who once ruled the area. Today Maputo has a population of close to one million people.
The city of Maputo features typical Portuguese architecture and is a planned city with wide avenues and square blocks. During the colonial and civil wars the city slide into a state of dereliction, but was never damaged. Recovery of the city has been slow but there are now many new buildings that have been erected.
Maputo has many interesting attractions such as the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima, a military museum, a museum of Mozambican history and the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane- the first university to be opened in Mozambique.
The Associação Núcleo de Arte is the cultural and artistic centre of Maputo. The Associação Núcleo de Arte has palyed a major role in the cultural life of the metropolitan area of Maputo for many decades. Exhibitions are frequently held here where over one hundred painters, sculptors and ceramists display their work.
