General Information about Tangier

Known as the Gateway to Morocco is Tangier, one of the most diverse cities in Morocco. Tangier is located on the tip of northern Morcco on the Strait of Gibraltar, which seperates the city from Spain, 13 kilometres away. Although is it located a little more than 200 kilometres north of Morocco's capital city Rabat, Tangier still has quite a large population of 700,000 people. Tangier is the second most important industrial area of Morocco, after Casablanca and has been home to many famous names such as writers of the Beat Generation including Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.

As such a multicultural city, Tangier has many famous landmarks relating to Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions such as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Grande Mosquee and St Andrew's Church. Some of the other well-known sites in the city include the Kasbah, Galerie Delacroix, Medina and Musee d'Art Contemporain.

Tangier's Grande Mosquee, or Grand Mosque, is located along Rue Jemaa el-Kebir which starts in Medina. The mosque is believed to have been built here as it was formerly the site of a Roman temple. A small Portuguese church also occupied the area at one time.

The Kasbah is situated at the highest point of the city and is kept isolated from the Medina by it's walls. Enterence to the Kasbah from the Medina is via the Bab el-Aassa, the south eastern gate. This gate opens into a large courtyard which leads to the Dar el-Makhzem, the former Sultan's Palace which dominates Tangier's skyline. Today the palace houses two museums, the Museum of Moroccan Art and the Museum of Antiquities. Both of these museums are known as The Kasbah Museum.
