General Information about Rabat

Rabat is the capital and one of the largest cities in the African country Morocco. Rabat is situated in the north west of Morocco on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Beginning as a settlement known as Chellah in the 3rd century BC, Rabat has a long history. The Romans captured the city in 40AD and held reign until 250AD when it was given to the Berber people. From 1146 onwards, the city was a strong military base and was given the name Ribatu I-Fath meaning 'a stronghold of victory'. The name Rabat is a derivative of this.

There are many places of interest in Rabat such as the Mausoleum of Mohammad V, the Mohammad V University, Hassan Tower, The Oudaya and the Chellah Necropolis. Other popular attracions include the King's Palace and the Medina Bazzar.

Construction on the Hassar Tower began in 1195AD and was intended to become part of the world's largest mosque. In 1199AD construction of the mosque was brought to as halt when the Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour died. Since then just the miraret, of Hassar Tower has stood along with some uncompleted walls of the mosque. Hassar Tower is made of red sandstone and stands at 44 metres tall, just over half of it's intended 86 metre height.

Opposite to the Hassar Tower is the Mausoleum of Mohammad V. Construction of the mausoleum was completed in 1971 and is one of the greatest examples of modern Alaouite architecture. The Mausoleum of Mohammad V houses the tomb of the former Moroccan King and his two sons, Prince Abdallah and King Hassan II.
