Casablanca

General Information about Casablanca

Casablanca, also known as Dar el Beida in Arabic, is located in western Morocco about 100 kilometres south west of the nation's capital city Rabat. Casablanca is the largest city of Morocco with a population of more than 3.1 million people. The city is also the primary port of the nation and the sixth largest city in the continent of Africa. The city Casablanca is most famous as the location of the 1942 film Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Of the many attractions and landmarks in Casablanca, some of the most famous are Port of Casablanca, Cathedrale du Sacre-Coeur, City Hall, Hassan II Mosque, Old Medina, Royal Palace, Notre Dame de Lourdes and Chleuh Mosque. Also in Casablanca is the Yasmina Amusement Park.

Cathedrale du Sacre-Coeur was designed in 1930 by Paul Tornon and is a massive white church which blends European styles and traditional Moroccan influences. The cathedral is located at the north western edge of the Parc de la Ligue Arabe and has been used as a church, school, theatre and cultural centre since it's construction. Today Cathedrale du Sacre-Coeur hosts various fairs and exhibitions which take place throughout the year.

Possibly the most recognised feature of Casablanca is the Hassan II Mosque which was designed by French architect Mihel Pinseau and constructed in the late 1980's. This is the largest mosque in Morocco and the second largest in the world and features the world's tallest minaret which stands at 210 metres high. Almost half of the mosque is built over the Atlantic Ocean, inspired by the verse in the Qur'an which states 'The throne of God was built over water'. This part of the mosque features a glass floor which can hold up to 25,000 people. A further 80,000 people can be accomodated in the courtyard of the Hassan II Mosque.
