Palenque

General Information about Palenque

Set within the the state of Chiapas is where you will find the ruins of the ancient Maya city known as Palenque. Located near the Usumacinta River in the National Park of Palenque these fascinating ruins are listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site is well worth the journey. The closest city near Palenque is known as Villahermosa which is located within the state of Tabasco and is approximately two hours away.

Palenque is home to a variety of archaeological ruins with some dating as far back as 600 C.E. The Temple of the Inscriptions is one of Palenque's most well known monuments which was completed in 683 A.D The actual temple is surrounded by a pyramid of eight stairs and features five entrances in total. Travelling to Palenque is simple with the most popular means of transport being via bus with services travelling from destinations such as Mexico City, Cancun, Oaxaca and Play del Carmen.
