General Information about Langkawi

Langkawi is an archipelago in Malaysia which is comprised of 99 islands, and an additional 5 temporary islands at low tide. Langkawi is situated 30 kilometres off Malaysia's main coast and is 405 kilometres north west of Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur. The archipelago is 120 kilometres north east of George Town, the capital of nearby Malaysian island state Penang. The only two islands of the Langkawi archipelago which are inhabited are the large Pulau Langkawi and the smaller Pulau Tuba. Pulau Langkawi has a population of 45,000 people and it's main town is Kuah.

Since the 1990's Langkawi has been competing with nearby Penang Island for the title of Malaysia's most popular tourist destination. Langkawi is extremely popular due to it's abundance of 5 star resorts and beaches. Some of the best sites to visit include Makam Mahsuri's tomb, Underwater World Langkawi, Dataran Lang and the Al-Hana Mosque.

Langkawi's Underwater World is home to more than 5,000 different species of aquatic life including mammals and reptiles. There is also a 3-D movie theatre which screens documentaries on the varying marine life of Langkawi and Malaysia. Langkawi's Underwater World is one of the best known attractions of the archipelago and is a great place to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.

Located next to the Tourism Information Office in Kuah is the Al- Hana Mosque. This mosque is constructed in an Islamic style, but also features traditional Malay elements, and carvings and motifs from Uzbekistan. The Al-Hana Mosque was opened by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, in 1959 and holds a very special place in the history of Langkawi.
