Kota KinabaluGeneral Information about Kota KinabaluFormerly known as Jesselton, Kota Kinabalu is the capital of the state of Sabah, in the island of Bourneo, Malaysia. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo, in the east of Malaysia and faces the South China Sea. Often referred to as K.K., the city of Kota Kinbalu is home to more than 532,100 people. The city is one of the major commercial and industrial centres of East Malaysia, making Kota Kinabalu one of the fastest growing cities in the county.
There are many cultural and historical attractions in Kota Kinabalu such as Atkinson Clock Tower, Sabah State Mosque, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, Sabah State Museum, Signal Hill Observation Pavillion, Science and Technology Centre, Central Market and the Tun Mustapha Tower.
The Sabah State Mosque can hold up to five thousand visitors at one time and is one of the most popular places to visit in Kota Kinabalu. The Sabah State Mosque is one of the best examples of contemporary Islamic architecture in Kota Kinabala and is situated south of the city centre, away from the noise and heat. The mosque features golden domes and minarets which are visible from the nearby Kampung Air stilt village and on the way to and from the airport.
One of the most recognised landmarks of Kota Kinabalu is the Atkinson Clock Tower which stands at the foot of Signal Hill. The tower was built in 1903, in memory of Francis George Atkinson, the first District Officer of Jesselton who died at age 28 from Malaria. The Atkinson Clock Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kota Kinabalu and is made entirely from wood and without nails. The tower survived the destruction of the city during World War II and keeps time for Kota Kinabalu to this day.
