Malaysia is considered to be a middle-income country and transformed its economy from 1971 through to the late 90's from an economy mainly based on raw materials to a multi-sector economy. Malaysia has a low unemployment rate of only 3 percent with only 8 percent living below the poverty line. The service industry is the main source of income and contributes over 59 percent while employing almost half of the population. Closely followed is the industry sector on 33 percent with the agricultural industry only providing 7 percent.
