Luang PrabangGeneral Information about Luang PrabangLuang Prabang, also spelt Louangphrabang, is located in northern Laos, about 220 kilometres north west of the nation's capital city Vientiane. Luang Prabang is situated on the Mekong River and is a UNESCO World Heritage city. The city was formerly the capital of Luang Prabang Kingdom, and then the capital of Laos after the communist takeover. Luang Prabang has been inhabited since the 1st century AD and currently has a population of 103,000 people.
There are numerous temples and religious sites in Luang Prabang of various sizes. Some of the most visited include Wat Aham, Wat Chom Phet, Wat Choumkhong, Wat Ho Pha Bang, Wat Long Khun, Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham and Wat Xeing Thong.
Wat Xieng Thong is considered to be the most magnificent temple in Luang Prabang and is located on the tip of the peninsula between the Mekong River and Nam Khan. The wat (or temple) was built in 1560 by King Setthathirat and is also the oldest in the city. In 1828 the haw tai, Tripitaka library, was added to the wat, then the haw kawng, Drum Tower, was added in 1961. Wat Xieng Thong was under royal patronage until 1975. Today it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Luang Prabang.
Another popular site in Luang Prabang is the Royal Palace. This was constructed in 1904, during the French era for King Sisavang Vong and his family. The last royal family to live in the palace was that of King Savang Vatthana before the monarchy was overthrown in 1975 by communists. The palace then became the Royal Palace Museum. The building is a blend of traditional Lao and French styles and is built in the form of a double-cruciform. There are many Buddhas and religious artifacts displayed inside the Royal Palace Museum along with royal artifacts and prized artworks.
