Kuwait

General Information about Kuwait

Kuwait is located in the Middle East at the head of the Persian Gulf and is bordered by Iraq to the north and west and Saudi Arabia to the south. The name Kuwait comes from the Arabic meaning of 'fortress built near water'. Kuwait has a population of over 2,300,000 people. The official language of Kuwait is Arabic, though English is widely spoken also. Most of the Kuwaiti population follow either Sunni Muslim or Shi'a Muslim religions. There are very small minority groups of Christians and Hindus. Kuwait is a mixture of strict Islam and westernisation. Kuwait's capital and largest city is Al-Kuwait, or Kuwait City, and is located on the Persian Gulf. This city is home to over 32,500 people.

Failaka Island is Kuwait's main archaeological site. The history of this island goes back to the mainly Bahrainian Bronze Age Dilmun civilisation. In the 4th century BC, Nearchus, an admiral of Alexander the Great's, sent the Greeks here. There is a temple on the island which is the island's main attraction. Kuwait City has many attractions including the Grand Mosque. Construction on The Grand Mosque began in 1979 and it was completed in 1986. The Grand Mosque is now the biggest mosque in Kuwait and can hold almost 11,000 people. The dome of the mosque has the Asma al-hosna (99 names of God) decorating it.

Kuwait experiences a desert like climate with two main seasons. Summer begins in May and continues on until October and are hot, humid and dry with average temperatures of 38 degrees. If you are planning on visiting during April and September then you should expect to experience some of Kuwait's warmest weather conditions with temperatures sitting around 44 degrees and sometimes going as high as 54 degrees. Winter lasts from December up until April with temperatures going below freezing during the evenings and average daily temperatures of 21 degrees. Rainfall mainly occurs during October and April with annual averages of 1 to 7 inches. During March and April the desert of Kuwait sometimes turns a shade of green, if there is enough rainfall during that period.

Kawait which can be found in the Middle East and has a total area of 17,820 square kilometres. Kawait has a coastline that extends for over 499 kilometres along the Persian Gulf. The terrain of Kawait is mostly flat with undulating desert plains. Kawait is rich in limestone and in the southern parts the limestone rises in a long north oriented dome that can be found below the surface. The highest point of Kawait remains unnamed today and rises to just over 306 metres while the lowest point is the Persian Gulf at sea level.

Economy

Kawait has a very strong economy which is largely due to its large supplies of crude oil. In fact Kuwait has one of the world's largest known oil reserves as well as being one of the richest. Oil exports are so great that they claim over 95 percent of the Kuwait's exports and accounts for almost half of the national GDP. The industry sector is the most important factor to the economy with cement, shipbuilding and repair, water desalination, food processing, construction materials and of course petroleum and petrochemicals. The agricultural industry is very low due to only 0.84 percent of the land being arable. The service industry is the second most important contributor to the economy with a contribution of over 44 percent. The main exports of Kuwait are fertilizers, oil and refined products. The official currency of Kuwait is the Kuwaiti Dinar.
