Jordan

General Information about Jordan

Jordan is a small country located in the Middle East and is almost completely landlocked, except for it's tiny border with the Gulf Of Aqaba. Jordan is also bordered by Syria, Iraq, Israel, The West Bank and Saudi Arabia. Jordan shares the Dead Sea with Israel. Jordan has a population of over 5.9 million people who are among the friendliest people in the world.

The official language of Jordan is Arabic. English is widely understood by the middle and upper class population. Jordan is an Arab state and over 92% of the population follow the Sunni Muslim religion. Other Islamic branches followed include Baha'i and Druze and there is also a small following of Christianity. The Jordan Valley is home to the Baha'i community. The capital and largest city of Jordan is Amman, situated in the northwest of the country, which is home to over 2,100,000 people.

Most of the popular attractions in Jordan are very close to Amman such as The Baptism Site where John baptised Jesus, Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land and then died, the ruin of the Qasr al Abd in the valley of Wadi Seer and Petra, the 'Rose Red City half as old as time' which appeared in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The deserts of Wadi Rum is also a famous site as this is where parts of the movie Lawrence of Arabia were filmed.

Jordan's climate is generally Mediterranean although it can be particulary arid in the desert in east and south. Summers are hot and dry with July and August being the warmest months to visit with temperatures rising above 36 degrees. Winter begins in November lasting until April with cool conditions Jordan with some regions experiencing snow, rain and strong winds. Most of Jordan's rainfall occurs during the winter months with averages of 16 inches in the northwest and 4 inches in the South. The best times to visit Jordan are in spring and autumn.

Set in the Middle East, Jordan is a large country with an area of over 92,300 square kilometres with a coastline of just 26 kilometres. Jordan which is officially known as the Hashemite Kingdon of Jordan and shares with Israel the coastlines of the Dead Sea, and the Gulf of Aqaba. The highest point of Jordan is the Jabal Umm da Dami which rises to over 1,854 metres and and is located near the Saudi Arabia border. Jordan's lowest point is the Dead Sea at 408 metres below sea level.

Most of the terrain of Jordan is desert plateau in the east with highlands in the west. Found in modern day Israel is the Jordan Rift Valley which is over 375 kilometres long, 5 kilometres wide in the north and over 23 kilometres wide in the south and forms part of the Great Rift Valley. The Great Rift Valley is over 6,000 kilometres in length and runs through Syria and Mozambique. The Jordan River which flows through the Great Rift Valley into the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee flows for over 251 kilometres. The Jordan River is thought to be one of the world's most sacred rivers and is known as Nehar Hayarden in Hebrew.

Economy

Jordan struggles with insufficient water supplies and is poor in natural resources particulary oil. The service industry is the main contributor to the economy by providing over 85 percent and employing over 82 percent of the population. The agricultral industry is low due to low water levels and only approximately three percent of the land being arable. The main produces are citrus, tomatoes, olives and livestock. Jordan mainly exports clothing, pharmaceuticals, potash, phosphates, fertilizers, vegetables, and manufactures. The official currency of Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar.
