General Information about Japan

Japan is an Asian country made up of over three thousand islands located in the Pacific Ocean. Japan is sometimes reffered to as "The Land of the Rising Sun" because the Japanese characters used to spell Japan mean 'sun-origin'. Japan has a population of over 127,400,000 people making it the 10th most populated country in the world. The language spoken in Japan is Japanese. 84% of the Japanese population follow both Shinto and Buddhist religions. Japan's biggest island is Honsh? which is where Japan's capital city Tokyo is situated. After World War II Japan recovered and is now thriving with theme parks, advanced technology, Bullet Trains and more.

There are many things to do in Japan. One of the most popular places to visit for fun and entertainment is Tokyo Disneyland, located in Urayasu, Chiba which is just outside Tokyo. Tokyo Disneyland was opened in 1983 and was the first Disneyland to be built outside of the USA. For the more adventurous there is Mount Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain to climb. Although you can climb Mount Fuji at anytime the official climbing season is between 1st July and 31st August.

Japan experiences a temperate climate in most parts of the country with four main seasons. Japan's climate is greatly effected by the Siberian weather system as well as the patterns of the south Pacific. May through to July are the wettest months to visit Japan while hot, humid weather should be expected if your planning on visiting between June, July and August. Winters are usually mild although in the northern and western parts snow is heavy and frequent.

Set along the Pacific Coast of Asia Japan has a total land area of 377,923 square kilometres and is the 62nd largest country in the world. Japan is only 36 degrees north of the equator and 138 east of the Prime Meidian. Japan has a coastline of over 29,751 kilometres that covers all of Japan's islands. The main islands of Japan are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu and has over 3,000 islands and islets included in its large stratovolcanic archipelago. The highest peak of Japan is the famous Mount Fuji that measures over 3,776 metres which can be found in Honshu in the region of Chubu. The lowest point is Hachiro-gata which is only four metres below sea level. The longest river in Japan is the Shinano River which flows for over 367 kilometres. Japan's terrain is mostly rugged and mountainous.

Japan's economy is so well advanced that it is the worlds largest free-market economy after the U.S. The service industry in Japan accounts for over 70 percent of the economy with the industry sector sittin on 25 percent. The agricultural industry is very small and only contributes a bit over 1 percent although only 4 percent of the population is employed in this industry. The official currency of Japan is the Yen.
