Indonesia is located in southern Asia and is made up of over 17,000 islands between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago state and has a population of over 234 million people making it the 4th most populated country in the world. With 86% of Indonesia's population being Muslim, Indonesia has the most people following Islamic beliefs in the world but is not officially an Islamic state. The official language spoken is Indonesian with English, Dutch and Indonesian dialects (most commonly Javenese) also spoken.

Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia and is situated on the northwest coast of the Java Island. Bali has a population of over 3 million people and is one of the most popular islands to visit in Indonesia. Bali has many temples, beaches, mountains and of course the local beer Bintang that are all major attractions for tourists.

Indonesia has a typical tropical climate although the conditions are generally effected by Indonesia's proximity to the equator. There are two main seasons in Indonesia with a wet season starting in November lasting until March the dry season begins in April and ends in October. Temperatures are usually warm with averages of 23-31 degrees with the weather being warmer along the coastal regions. Monsoons are common in Indonesia during the wet season but particulary in the towns of Java, Sumatra and the Lesser Sunda islands where heavy rains are brought in from a western monsoon. These regions are effected by the western type monsoon mainly from December to February with the eastern monsoon arriving in June and lasting until the end of August.

Set in the Maly Archipelago Indonesia has a extensive coastline that covers over 54,716 kilometres with a total landmass of 1,919,440 square kilometres covered over all 17,508 islands of the archipelago. Over 6,000 of the islands of Indonesia are inhabited with the most important islands being Nusa tenggara and the Maluku Islands. There are also five other main islands including, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, and New Guinea. Although Borneois shared by Malaysia and Brunei with New Guinea is shared by Papua New Guinea. The highest point in Indonesia is Puncak which measures over 5,030 metres and can be found on the island of New Guinea. Puncak Jaya is also often referred to as Mount Carstensz and is the highest point between the the Andes which is the higest exposed mountain range in the world and the Himalayas. Most of the terrain in Indonesia is coastal although the larger islands are mountainous in the interior.
